We provide the facilities, resources, and educational programing that fosters a collaborative creation and enhancement of economic opportunities while improving social conditions. At Forward, members address problems facing communities such as displacement from gentrification, affordable housing, health disparities, environmental issues, unemployment, poverty, inequality, drug use and financial, political, and digital literacy. Tools made available include a space for collaborate project work and classes, computers, sewing machines, VR/AR equipment, 3D printers, videography/photography tools, and more.
By planting seeds and supporting growth within members of local communities through instilling principles of human-centered design while exploring emerging technologies we foster a true sustainable method of economic development.
Forward, is a space that is for ALL community members regardless of income level, that will place community residents in the position to see themselves as “change makers” and not just “consumers” in how they utilize technology.
To create new solution Forward promotes new ways of thinking and embraces new different methodologies.
Forward was founded in 2019 by DIVAS (Digital Interactive Visual Arts Sciences) for Social Justice (est. 2007), a non-profit organization empowers and inspires youth living in underserved communities in NYC to use tech and visual arts to promote social justice and become change makers in their communities.
Before launching Forward in 2019, Divas for Social Justice has launched 3 programs in Laurelton, Queens and Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn while engaging more than 1200 community members. Since launching Forward has hosted a 2019 Virtual Reality Mentorship for Teens serving 25 members and created employment opportunities for 3 members.
The Forward team brings passion, creativity, and expertise from many areas impacting community economic development including technology, design, financial services, social justice, entrepreneurship, community and economic development. We are trained to work with community members of all ages in engaging ways to help motivate and drive positive change in our communities.
